Are the Rusty Knight and the Castle Maiden Bo married?

To answer this question, I decided to write a book. It’s called Rusty and Bo and it describes how the Castle Maiden Bo came to live in the Iron Castle. I can give away this much: the two are childhood friends, but not a married couple. The reason Bo becomes a maiden is because she was the one who rescued Rusty in the Fairytale Forest.

Why does Koke have a pocket lighter for a nose?

When I came up with the idea for Koke, there were already a lot of other dragons out there and they all looked about the same: small and green. I wanted a dragon that wouldn’t be confused with Tabaluga, so, I gave him a pocket lighter nose.

Is the Rusty Knight really a robot?

No, he’s a knight made of scrap metal. He even has a heart, but it’s not where you’d think. It has sunk into his boots.

Who composes the songs for 'Rusty Knight'?

All of the music is composed completely by Felix Janosa. Most of the texts are by me. Some of the texts, though, Felix wrote and some we wrote together. But, it’s often such a back and forth collaboration that we don’t really know anymore who wrote what.

How well can you play chess?

Not very well. I had to learn a lot about chess when I was writing Fritz & Chesster and since then, I really enjoy watching a chess duell; but when it gets down to it, I let my co-author, Björn Lengwenus play instead of me. He’s really good at chess and has a bunch of ELOs.

What are your hobbies?

My favorite thing to do is play the lute. Especially, the Baroque Lute and the largest of all the Lutes, called the Theorbo or Chitarrone. It’s over six feet long and is mainly used in Figured Bass music. Other than that, I play sports regularly. In my youth, I was even South German junior champion in Volleyball, but now I’d rather go jogging or play badminton and every now and then, I play tennis with my wife.

What is your relation to the German poet Joachim Ringelnatz?

Indirect: he was my great grandmother’s second cousin. As far as I know, his great great uncle was my great great great grandfather, Ernst Rietschel, who helped build the Goethe/Schiller Monument in Weimar.

Is there any kind of music that you really can’t stand?

Background music of every kind. If I’m not listening, then I turn it off. I don’t like restaurants that play music in the background. Even in the car, the music is usually turned off.

When do you work the best?

In the mornings. I have a study at home where I often work starting right after breakfast. Sometimes, I still have my bathrobe on, so the mail carrier thinks either I’m totally crazy or else I’m a sleepwalker. I’m both.
